Military Insurance

Military Insurance Detail
As the Department of Defense's insurance provider Tricare offers many types of health-related insurance plans to members of all branches of the uniformed services and their families. Although primarily known for its medical coverage, Tricare policies for dental, pharmacy and a wraparound supplement to Social Security may also be purchased by members of the military. Coverage levels and other benefits for many plans depend upon factors such as where beneficiaries receive treatment and the rank of the qualifying military member.
Tricare offers three levels of plans to meet families' financial needs and flexibility. All active-duty service members receive full coverage at any level and are not required to make co-payments at any plan level, so many details apply only to family members. Tricare Prime allows families to receive free care when treated at a military medical facility, and is offered at no cost to all family members. Tricare Extra allows users to visit civilian physicians' offices at the lowest co-payment rates, with a $300 annual deductible for families, a 15 percent co-payment for visits to civilian physicians and a $14.35 per day co-payment for inpatient admission. Tricare Standard offers the same coverage levels as the Extra plan, save that co-payments at civilian doctors rise to 20 percent.
